New Mexico — alkaline-soil region (lime rarely needed)

v1.0 (2026-05-23) · New Mexico soils are predominantly alkaline. NMSU's Soil, Water, and Agricultural Testing (SWAT) Laboratory CLOSED in June 2012; Guide A-146 now refers farmers to outside labs. Free-lime content is treated as a CONSTRAINT (not as a buffer signal): soils with >3% CaCO3 will have pH ≥ 7.5 and high buffering against pH change. Rare exception: high-elevation mountain valleys (Sangre de Cristos, Mogollon Rim foothills) can have mildly acidic soils.
